Beyond The Classroom

Often through collaboration with other organizations, students at AJC have opportunities to participate in a wide variety of programs and experiences that extend their learning and development outside of the structure of the typical classroom.   While programs and activities vary from year to year, below is a listing of most of the current offerings:

  • Summer Camps – Overnight (Camp Alkulana, Shrine Mont, Comfort Zone Camp) and Day Camp Experiences in the Richmond area
  • Blue Sky Fund – rock climbing elective
  • Boys to Men – mentoring group for 8th grade boys
  • Make Space – an art program run by the Visual Arts Center for all 6th grade girls that includes a ‘big sister’ for each participant
  • Art for the Journey – weekly art classes for the 4th and 5th grades classes and a weekly art elective for select 6th-8th grade students
  • Oakwood Arts – audio/visual media elective
  • Violin program for 4th-6th grade students
  • Downtown YMCA Leadership Program for select 8th grade students
  • Choir and Theatre Arts program
  • Kids in the Kitchen – program for 7th grade girls to promote healthy lifestyle choices, sponsored by Junior League of Richmond
  • Class-A-Roll – nutrition program for 4th graders sponsored by Bon Secours
  • Game Club – club for board games and chess enthusiasts
  • Trip to New York City for the School’s top readers
  • Community Service (8th graders)
  • Field Trips
  • Prayer leaders
  • School duties, e.g. serving and cleaning up at meals, classroom duties, taking care of the grounds, athletic captains, reading at chapel
